Austin Directory Build 1 - Building a Directory from Scratch

How to Build a Contractors Directory Website (Step-by-Step)

Austin Contractors Series - Episode 1

Follow along as I build a contractor directory for Austin, Texas from scratch. This first episode covers site setup, creating categories, and configuring the initial SEO settings.

I’m starting a new project: building a contractor directory for Austin, Texas from scratch. In this series, I’ll show you everything – the setup, SEO strategy, importing listings, and we’ll track the traffic and leads over time.

This first post covers setting up the directory site, creating categories, and configuring the initial SEO settings.

Contractors need leads. Homeowners search Google for “plumber near me” or “Austin roofer” all the time. A directory that ranks for those searches can monetize that traffic through paid listings, featured placements, or lead generation. Companies like Angi, Thumbtack, and HomeAdvisor have built entire businesses on this model.

Step 1: Create the Directory Site

I'm using My Directory Kit, a platform I built specifically for directories. It makes it simpler to manage and automate them with AI.

To set up:

  1. Go to mydirectorykit.com and click "Get Started"
  2. Select your plan (I chose Advanced Directory + AI SEO)
  3. Name your site (I used "Austin Contractors")
  4. Complete checkout

The site is created as a subdomain initially - you can connect a custom domain later. Once checkout is complete, click "Access Your Site" to log into the WordPress dashboard.

Step 2: Set Up Directory Categories

The site comes with demo content pre-loaded. For a fresh start, I removed the existing categories and created my own.

Categories I added:

  • Roofing
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC
  • Electrical
  • Landscaping
  • Remodeling
  • General Contractor

To add categories:

  1. Go to Directory Kit → Listings → Categories
  2. Delete any demo categories you don't need
  3. Add your own categories (just the title is fine to start)

Some listings will belong to multiple categories - we'll handle that when importing.

Step 3: Configure AI SEO Settings

Under My AI SEO Kit → Site Setup, you'll configure the information that AI uses to generate content throughout your directory.

Site Overview

Use the Overview Generator to quickly fill this out:

  • Site Type: Local business directory
  • Target Audience: Homeowners in Austin looking for contractors
  • Unique Value: Focused on Austin metro area, organized by service type and location

The generator creates a description based on your answers. You can edit it or use it as-is.

Brand Voice

  • Tone: Professional
  • Leave other settings default for now - you can adjust as you go

Primary Focus Keywords

You can add keywords manually, bulk import them, or use the AI Suggest feature. I used AI Suggest to generate relevant keywords and added them all. These keywords guide the AI when generating content for listings, category pages, and blog posts.

Blog Setup

Remove any demo blog categories and use AI Suggest to generate relevant ones for your niche. I added categories like Home Improvement Tips, Contractor Guides, and Austin Local.

How much does it cost to build a contractor directory website?
Costs vary depending on your platform. With My Directory Kit, plans start at $99/month for a basic directory and $199/month with AI SEO features. You'll also need a domain name ($10-15/year) and potentially data for listings.
Contractor directories typically monetize through paid listings (contractors pay to be featured), premium placements, lead generation fees, or advertising. Some charge monthly subscriptions, others charge per lead.
No. Platforms like My Directory Kit are built on WordPress and handle the technical setup. You manage listings, categories, and content through a dashboard - no coding required.
The initial setup shown in this video took about 15 minutes. Getting the site fully populated with listings, content, and design customization takes longer - we cover that in upcoming videos.
Start with the most common services in your area: roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, landscaping, remodeling, and general contractors. You can add more specific categories as you grow.
Yes. Directory sites start on a subdomain but you can connect your own custom domain. We cover that in a later video in this series.
